Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is facing sharp criticism after a premium office chair seen at her office triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders questioning the BJP government’s spending priorities amid the capital’s ongoing civic problems, including water shortages and infrastructure complaints.
The controversy began after AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha highlighted online images of a light grey luxury office chair allegedly being used in the Delhi Chief Minister’s office. According to claims circulating online, the chair appears to be a premium RedOAK Imperio recliner model featuring an electric recline system and built-in massager, reportedly priced at around ₹66,080 after discount. However, there has been no official confirmation yet from the Delhi government regarding the procurement process or whether taxpayer money was used for the purchase.
Opposition Targets BJP Over “VIP Comfort” Politics
The issue quickly turned political, with leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party accusing the BJP-led Delhi government of misplaced priorities. Critics questioned why attention was allegedly being given to expensive office comforts while several parts of Delhi continue to struggle with water shortages, drainage complaints, and civic concerns.
AAP supporters on social media argued that public representatives should focus more on solving essential problems rather than appearing to embrace luxury in government offices. Some users described the optics as “tone deaf” at a time when ordinary citizens are dealing with rising living costs and basic service disruptions.
BJP Supporters Push Back, Cite “Sheesh Mahal” Debate
Supporters of the BJP, however, dismissed the criticism as political hypocrisy. Several party supporters pointed toward past controversies surrounding former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and allegations linked to the so-called “Sheesh Mahal” spending row, arguing that the current criticism over a single office chair is exaggerated and politically motivated. The BJP and Rekha Gupta have previously used the “Sheesh Mahal” issue to target the AAP government over alleged lavish spending.
The controversy has intensified because there is still no public clarity on an important question: Was the chair personally purchased, part of a standard office furnishing setup, or bought using government funds? Until official details emerge, the issue is likely to remain a talking point in the ongoing BJP-AAP political battle.
